Last weekend, LA Galaxy II defeated Arizona United SC 2-0 in the team’s 2016 USL Regular Season debut.
Newly signed LA Galaxy forward Ariel Lassiter scored twice in the first half, wasting no time to prove he’s the same dominant player the league saw in 2015. A 2-0 halftime lead looked less safe after a red card was shown to defender Oscar Sorto at the 62nd minute, but Los Dos Head Coach Curt Onalfo brought on freshly signed midfielder Bryam Rebellon for forward Denzel Slager to help shore up the backline and secure the team’s first clean sheet of the season. Clement Diop stood between the sticks for Los Dos, recording three saves in what was barely a threatening evening for the Galaxy defense. Lassiter was selected to USL’s Team of the Week for his two-goal performance.
The club set a new attendance record of 2,715 in the season debut at StubHub Center’s main stadium on Saturday.
As for the opposition, Saint Louis FC fell on the road in its season opener against Real Monarchs SLC on an extra time goal from Real Monarchs substitute Maikon Orellana. STLFC’s loss is the first result in a stretch of four road games to start the season. Wednesday’s match is the only scheduled meeting between the two teams in the 2016 USL Regular Season.
Last season, Saint Louis finished 9th in the Eastern Conference with an 8-11-9 (33 points) record. Four players co-led the team with four goals in USL play last season. Three of them are back, and each appeared in the team’s 2016 opener: Jeremie Lynch, Mike Ambersley and Jamiel Hardware.
Saint Louis FC is led by Head Coach Dale Schilly. Prior to joining Saint Louis, Schilly, a St. Louis native, served as the Program Director of what is now one of the club’s main feeder academies: St. Louis Scott Gallagher Illinois.
This winter, Saint Louis FC and the Chicago Fire renewed their affiliation relationship for the 2016 season, the second season of the partnership. This season, the Fire have loaned defender Patrick Doody and midfielder Drew Conner to Saint Louis. Conner was signed by the Fire as a Homegrown Player on Dec. 17, 2015, after his career as a four-year starter at the University of Wisconsin. As for Doody, he returns to STLFC for his second season on loan with the side.
After Wednesday night’s match, Los Dos will hit the road ahead of its first road game of the season on Saturday against Real Monarchs SLC at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Kickoff will be at 6:00 p.m. PT.
