Match Report: LA Galaxy advance to Open Cup quarterfinals with 1-0 win over Portland Timbers

The LA Galaxy rode an early goal to the quarterfinal round of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, defeating the Portland Timbers 1-0 at Providence Park in the Round of 16.

The Galaxy took care of business early, as Homegrown midfielder Raul Mendiola made a late run and received Emmanuel Boateng's centering pass in the box, burying it past Timbers goalkeeper Wade Hamilton just five minutes in.

Portland had a handful of decent looks, but failed to really test Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop for most of the night, even with the additions of Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi and Lucas Melano in the second half.

LA will host the Seattle Sounders in the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup on July 19 or 20.
