LA Galaxy II (10-7-9, 39 points) were defeated 3-0 by Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (15-10-4, 43 points) on Saturday night at Switchbacks Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo. The loss was the last match of a five-game road stretch for Los Dos.
Shutout for the sixth time of the season, it was a night to forget for LA Galaxy II. After going down early in the match, Los Dos struggled to threaten the Colorado Springs’ defense as their deficit grew.
Colorado Springs was first on the board in the 10th minute when an inswinging cross in the run of play from Switchbacks FC’s Saeed Robinson found the head of Mike Smith. Smith, unmarked and just outside the six-yard box, converted easily.
Smith would strike again in extra-time of the first half. After Switchbacks FC earned a corner from a mishandling of possession by Los Dos, Colorado Springs’ Luke Vercollone found Smith in the exact same spot from which he scored his first goal of the evening. Smith placed this header into the corner netting, earning his team a 2-0 halftime lead.
Of the five goals Switchbacks FC has scored on LA this season, Mike Seth has assisted or scored on four.
The narrative was much of the same in the second half, and it wasn’t long before Switchbacks FC added another goal. In the 58th minute, Vercollone bagged a goal of his own on a cross from defender Jordan Burt. Without much pressure from Los Dos, Colorado Springs were able to close out the match and secure all three points.
Next, Los Dos are back at home to take on rival Sacramento Republic FC for the third time of the season when they kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium. That night, LA Galaxy II will be hosting “Pups at the Park,” an event allowing fans of dogs and soccer the opportunity to bring their pets with them to the match.
