LOS ANGELES -- Landon Donovan will be returning to the LA Galaxy donning a new number for his hometown club.
Donovan, who announced on Thursday, that he would be coming out of retirement to play for the Galaxy for the remainder of the 2016 season, revealed that he'd be wearing the No. 26 for the Galaxy. With his familiar No. 10 belonging to Giovani dos Santos, Donovan opted for the No. 26 which commemorates the birth date of his son Talon (January 26) and his first number with Bayer Leverkusen.
According to Donovan, it was his wife Hannah who suggested the number.
"Obviously, I wore 10 for a long time, coming into a team this late in the stadium that’s not possible nor is something that I would want to do. My goal here is not to disrupt what is going on; it’s to supplement and to help," Donovan told LAGalaxy.com. "My wife suggested 26, we were texting one day, and she said ‘what about 26?’, I said ‘why 26’ and she that’s the day that Talon was born. That resonated, and then I looked back at numbers that I had worn, the first number that I wore at Bayer Leverkusen when I was 17 was 26. It’s a nice way to close the circle."
