CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy were dealt a major blow on Tuesday when Sebastian Lletget was ruled out for four to six months with a Lisfranc injury suffered during U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup Qualifier against Honduras.
Lletget was initially determined to be dealing with a left foot sprain, but after consultation with foot and ankle specialist Dr. Rachel Trichel, it was determined that the injury required surgery. The 24-year-old is scheduled to undergo surgery next week to correct the damage.
“We just wish him a speedy recovery. It’s a really difficult thing for the player to deal with when you have a significant injury at his age and in the great moment of his career,” LA Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo told reporters. “The focus is making sure that he gets all the right therapy and the proper surgery so that he can come back to help. It’s real unfortunate.
“[After] seeing the specialist it was really swollen apparently and once it went down and they were able to see what was going on, it was a significant injury. It’s unfortunate, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Onalfo refused to get down on his group despite Lletget’s injury. The Galaxy recently welcomed Giovani dos Santos, Ashley Cole, and Gyasi Zardes back to full training and should have a nearly full squad for their clash with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday.
Despite Lletget’s absence, Onalfo is confident that the Galaxy can rebound.
“It’s an opportunity for somebody else. The positive is that we go into the game with only a couple players injured where this last game, we had five guys out before. We have more to choose from,” Onalfo said. “I’m going to see the glass half full. The group is in a good state of mind, and we’re going to find ways to prevail. We’ll find ways to keep getting better, and we’re ready to go to Vancouver.”
