The now six-time MLS Cup champions defeated the Eastern Conference Champion New York Red Bulls at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, December 7 by a score of 2-1. The Galaxy got off the mark quickly with forward Joseph Paintsil scoring in the 9th minute on a first-time strike on the back of a through-ball by Gastón Brugman, one of the two replacements for Riqui Puig and Marco Reus in the central midfield. Just five minutes later, forward Dejan Joveljić doubled the Galaxy's lead from a dribble into the center of the box.
But in the 29th minute, the New York Red Bulls got one back through Sean Nealis from a scramble in the box following a corner kick to make it 2-1.
In the second half, both sides had their share of chances but neither could find another goal as the Galaxy held on to win 2-1 and claim their record sixth MLS Cup crown.
How the Galaxy got to MLS Cup presented by Audi:
The LA Galaxy came out firing in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs, beating the Colorado Rapids 5-0 at home before traveling to Commerce City, Colorado, where the Galaxy finished off the Round One Best-of-3 Series with a 4-1 win to advance in the minimum two games. Three weeks later in the Western Conference Semifinals, the Galaxy kept their foot on the gas pedal, beating the visiting Minnesota United 6-2 in the single-elimination game on November 24. The win advanced the Galaxy to the Western Conference Final against the Seattle Sounders, a team the Galaxy have twice defeated at the Conference Final stage en route to MLS Cup wins (2011, 2014).
After the Seattle Sounders defeated LAFC in their Western Conference Semifinals match, the Galaxy earned home-field advantage for the Western Conference Final against Seattle. With the Galaxy as the team with the most regular season points remaining in the playoffs, the club knew a win in the Conference Final would put MLS Cup at their home stadium. The 1-0 win over the Sounders put the Galaxy into the club's first MLS Cup since 2014, back at home where the Galaxy won the title in 2011, 2012 and 2014. The Galaxy are unbeaten at Dignity Health Sports Park this season and postseason.
