David Bingham shines with nine save performance to secure draw in Portland

CARSON, Calif. – David Bingham put forth one of the best goalkeeping performances in LA Galaxy history with his nine save showing against the Portland Timbers on Saturday afternoon.

Bingham stood on his head as he helped the Galaxy secure a valuable road point and snap Portland’s lengthy six-game win streak.

The Galaxy’s goalkeeper shined with several key saves including a clutch effort early in the game that kept Portland off the board despite an early flourish. Perhaps his best effort, however, came late in the first half when he made a timely reaction save off a Samuel Armenteros shot.

“David had a good game; he saved what he should have saved," head coach Sigi Schmid said. "He came up with a couple of big saves, but you know he held on to everything else that he should have. So, I thought he was solid today. He deserved the shutout, but he was solid.”

Added defender Ashley Cole, "He’s been great all season. Kept us in games and then today made some big saves for us when we needed him. That’s his job though. He’s paid to do that. I think he’s done really well since he’s been here and today he kept us in the game.”

For Bingham, the performance meant little due to the result.

“We knew coming up here was going to be a hard game," Bingham said. "They were on a good little streak, and they have players of quality, so we knew we would be under the gun for a little bit, and we were for a little more than we’d like, but we had to dig deep and get the point going home.”
