CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015) – LA Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant will retire following the 2015 MLS Season, the club announced today. Dunivant, 34, will finish his career as one of the most decorated players in MLS history with 282 all-time appearances, five MLS Cup trophies, two Supporters’ Shields and a U.S. Open Cup.
“I have given this game all that I can and will step away extremely thankful to have played in MLS for the last 13 seasons,” said Dunivant. “It has been an honor to represent four great clubs and is extremely special for me be a part of this league as it has continued to develop. I want to thank my family, coaches, teammates and fans, who have offered their constant support and helped make my career a successful one. The Galaxy have played such a meaningful role during my time in MLS and I am happy to finish this season while representing this club.”
Dunivant entered MLS when he was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes with the sixth overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. Throughout his 13-year career in MLS, Dunivant played for the San Jose Earthquakes, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC and LA Galaxy while winning five MLS Cups, two Supporters’ Shields and a U.S. Open Cup in addition to earning MLS Best XI honors in 2011.
“Todd has been one of the best ambassadors for MLS on-and-off the field,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Arena. “He has represented both this team and our league exceptionally and has been influential in helping it become what it is today. We’re proud and honored that Todd will finish his career with the Galaxy.”
Drafted by the Earthquakes in 2003, Dunivant went on make 30 starts and help lead his team to an MLS Cup during his rookie season, playing 2,778 minutes, the most of any field player that season. After suiting up for the Earthquakes the following year, Dunivant was acquired by the Galaxy ahead of the 2005 MLS season. That year, Dunivant was an instrumental member of the Galaxy squad that captured the 2005 MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup double, making 32 appearances during the regular season and all four games in the playoffs, including a 1-0 win over New England Revolution in the 2005 MLS Cup. Following stints with the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, the defender returned to the Galaxy in 2009, where he went on to win three MLS Cups (2011, 2012, 2014), two Supporters’ Shields (2010, 2011) and was named to the MLS Best XI (2011).
During his MLS career, Dunivant has made 282 all-time Regular Season appearances, scoring seven goals and adding 21 assists as a defender. He has made an additional 25 appearances in the MLS Cup Playoffs. This season for the Galaxy, the veteran has made three appearances and one start during the regular season.
Dunivant attended Stanford University from 1999 to 2002, where he was a three-time All-Pac-10 member and a NCAA First-Team All American. At Stanford, Dunivant earned a degree in Economics while graduating in three years, where he was named a First Team Academic All-American. Born in Wheat Ridge, Colo., he attended Dakota Ridge High School, being named to the Colorado All-State Team in 1997 and 1998 in addition to earning class valedictorian.
