The LA Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak in Reserve League play to three games with a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers in front of more than 6,000 fans at JELD-WEN Field on Saturday night. Leonardo and Chad Barrett each scored inside the opening 30 minutes while Josh Saunders made his first appearance in more than a month, making one save to earn the win.
The Galaxy went in front after just three minutes when Leonardo got on the end of a Kyle Nakazawa freekick and volleyed it past Portland goalkeeper Joe Bendik, putting LA in front 1-0.
However, the night would end for the Brazilian center back just seven minutes later as he was taken off with a right knee injury to be replaced by Sebastian Velazquez.
LA doubled their lead in the 30th minute when Chad Barrett scored his first goal of the season in the Reserve League. Just like the first goal, their second came from Nakazawa freekick, with the former UCLA midfielder sending a cross to the far post for Jack McBean. McBean cushioned a header back into the path of Barrett, who powered his header past Bendik to double the Galaxy lead.
Portland cut the Galaxy lead in half midway through the second half when Eric Alexander sent Saunders the wrong way with a penalty kick following a Rafael Garcia foul.
However, that would be as close as the hosts would get as LA held on for their second win of the season. The Galaxy are back in action in Reserve League play on Tuesday, June 12 when they head north to Canada to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC. LA and Portland will face one another once again in regular season action on Sunday, June 17 in their second meeting of the year at The Home Depot Center. That game kicks off at 4 p.m. and can be seen live on KDOC and KWHY.
