The LA Galaxy Foundation, in partnership with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), will unveil a brand-new community soccer field in Watts at 109th Street Recreation Center on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The new turf mini-pitch will be opened in conjunction with the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks, and LAPD Southeast Division and provide a safe place for the local Watts community to play soccer.
LA Galaxy goalkeeper and SNHU student Jon Kempin will be on hand to unveil the new field at 109th Recreation Center. Immediately following the unveiling ceremony, the Galaxy and SNHU will host a soccer clinic for 30 local youth members. Los Angeles City Councilmember Joe Buscaino, LA Galaxy President Chris Klein, SNHU Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships Steve Theil and Community Safety Partnership of LAPD Matthew Martinez are also scheduled to be on hand.
“We are thrilled to work with SNHU to provide a new soccer field in Watts,” said Chris Klein, President, LA Galaxy. “The LA Galaxy remain committed to our local community and we are pleased to provide another safe place for kids to play soccer in a neighborhood near StubHub Center. We are proud to partner with SNHU as they share our values and vision of giving back to the Los Angeles community.”
The field donation is the second of three initiatives between SNHU and LA Galaxy that focuses on giving back to the Los Angeles community this season. It also marks the eighth soccer field that the LA Galaxy have unveiled in the Los Angeles community in the last four years.
“Our partnership with the LA Galaxy gives us an opportunity to expand access to education in fun and interesting ways,” said Steve Thiel, Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships, SNHU. “Learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom; It happens online, at community safe spaces, and at fields like this. We’re thankful to the Galaxy and our student Jon Kempin for working with us to lend a helping hand to the city of Los Angeles and its Watts neighborhood.”
SNHU’s expanded partnership with the LA Galaxy Foundation will build on projects and relationships the foundation has cultivated with Habitat for Humanity, Mission Continues and other community organizations and initiatives. This was the fourth build the LA Galaxy has done with Habitat for Humanity in the past two years and the organization’s second year of working with Mission Continues. SNHU will work with these foundation partners and others throughout the course of the season as the university and the LA Galaxy look to support and give back to the community that surrounds the club and SNHU’s students.
