CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy president Chris Klein says the club will take an inward look after the departure of head coach Sigi Schmid.
The club announced on Monday morning that head coach Sigi Schmid stepped down from the team’s head coaching position. Assistant coach Dominic Kinnear will assume the team’s head coaching duties on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.
“We’re not satisfied or happy with where the team is at right now. Our expectations are much higher than that, and we know that responsibility extends beyond just Sigi.” Klein told reporters in a conference call on Monday. “In saying that, we still have a fighter’s chance and we’re going to continue to work and take it a game at a time and see if we can get back in the race. We’re three points out at this point, and we’re going to give it everything we have.”
In the unfortunate position of making two coaching changes in the last 18 months, Klein is determined to make the right decision as the team begins their coaching search.
“Sigi came in the middle of the season, and this is different [than last year]. This is a search for our next head coach. In doing that, we are going to look in the mirror and look at everything and the way that we operate and how we can get better,” Klein said. “We have a longer window to be able to conduct the appropriate search for next head coach. We’re going to do that.
“We understand the importance of that, and we understand what it can do for a team and a club. With this amount of time, we feel like we’re going to be afforded the chance to do that.”
