LOS ANGELES (Monday, April 4, 2022) – LA Galaxy forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández was voted the MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire for the fifth week of the 2022 MLS season.
Chicharito tallied his fourth career brace in the Galaxy’s 3-1 road win over the Portland Timbers on April 3, helping LA win its first match at Providence Park with fans in attendance dating back to July 23, 2016. During the 2022 campaign, Chicharito leads the team and ranks tied for second in the league with four goals scored in five games played (5 starts). With the two goals scored against Portland, Chicharito has now registered five career multi-goal games as a member of the Galaxy.
This marks Hernández’s fourth MLS Player of the Week award, after he garnered honors three times in the first 10 weeks of the 2021 season (Weeks 1, 2 and 10).
Up next, the Galaxy (3-2-0, 9 points) play host to LAFC (4-0-1, 13 points) in the 13th edition of El Tráfico at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, April 9. The April 9 match kicks off at 4:30 p.m. PT and features a national television broadcast on FOX and FOX Deportes.
The MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
