Over 250 2nd and 3rd grade students from Towne Avenue Elementary School and Leapwood Avenue Elementary School rushed the StubHub Center this morning for the second annual Read Across America Celebration hosted by the LA Galaxy, LA Chargers, StubHub Center, and MLS WORKS. Celebrating Dr. Seuss’s 114th birthday, Galaxy and Chargers players and staff joined in to help make this a memorable day for all.
After participating in a rigorous soccer clinic in the morning, students were welcomed to StubHub Center with lunch and a special reading with club president Chris Klein. Following lunch, students dispersed throughout the stadium to meet Galaxy and Charger players and participate in reading circles and crafting activities.
Daniel Steres and Tomas Hilliard-Arce represented the LA Galaxy, while James Onwuala, Damion Square and Denzel Perryman represented the Chargers. Players read Dr. Seuss classics such as The Lorax, and Cat in the Hat as students were able to converse and share in this unique experience. Some students were even able to try and tackle the 6’0, 243-pound linebacker Perryman.
Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. To continue the celebration of reading, MLS WORKS provided each student with a book of their own to take to take home.
With the Galaxy season opener just around the corner, Dr. Seuss’s wise words will set the tone come Sunday: “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your Mountain is waiting, so get on your way! The Galaxy begin their 2018 campaign on Sunday, March 4th at the StubHub Center when they host the Portland Timbers at 7 p.m. PT live on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
