As the sun began to rise on Sunday morning, the athletes were already lacing up their cleats, ready for any challenge that came their way. Joining forces with Southern California Special Olympics, the LA Galaxy held open tryouts, looking for the newest members of the Galaxy’s 2018 Special Olympics Southern California Unified Soccer Team.
The SOSC Unified Soccer Team Exchange programs combines athletes with and without intellectual disabilities for a unique experience that not only gives the participants the opportunity to join a professional soccer club, but also partake in various social experiences, make lifelong friends and build confidence.
Before stepping on the field, athletes were asked to write a short essay about what being a part of a Special Olympics Unified sports team would mean to them. Other questions included, “how can you help others recognize their own strengths?” and “what does inclusion mean to you?” The selection process balanced an athlete’s soccer skills with their ability to engage well with others.
Led by LA Galaxy Camps & Clinics Coaches, the athletes rotated through five stations testing their agility, passing, dribbling, shooting and scrimmaging abilities. After three hours of training, it was evident that the Galaxy’s team will not only be filled with talent, but its comradery will be at an all-time high.
Returning partner Juan Ortega, from Hawthorne, cited that his experiences from last season had made him a better person and gave him the opportunity to build relationships and make an impact in his community.
After a group photo, newly created handshake routines and a mad dash to grab the last fruit snacks, tryouts ended and coaches will now have the difficult task of narrowing it down to the 20 selected to join the team. This year’s team will have the opportunity to travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Real Salt Lake Unified Soccer team.
