CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014) – LA Galaxy II (14-7-5, 47 points) defeated the Real Salt Lake Reserves Wednesday afternoon at StubHub Center’s Track & Field Stadium as a first-half goal from Charlie Rugg gave the hosts three points. With the win, LA Galaxy II clinch a home playoff berth in the USL PRO quarterfinal matchup, played Saturday, Sept. 13 at StubHub Center.
Galaxy II opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Rugg put the hosts ahead off of a header, his eighth goal of the year in USL PRO play. Rugg got on the end of a free kick into the box from midfielder Andre Auras and smashed it past RSL goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez as Los Dos went in to the halftime break leading, 1-0.
Shortly into the second half, Auras nearly doubled the score on a free kick from just outside the 18. Forward Charlie Rugg was fouled on the edge of the area, and Auras stepped up and launched a shot that had the keeper beat, but bounced off the goalpost and out of play.
In goal, Los Dos earned a shutout behind Cody Laurendi and Brian Perk held Salt Lake scoreless, each putting in a half for Galaxy II. Galaxy II defense held Salt Lake to just five shots the entire match.
Curt Onalfo’s squad will now remain at StubHub Center when they face the Richmond Kickers Monday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
