LA Galaxy midfielder Efrain Alvarez has been called up by the Mexican Youth National Team U-17s for four international matches to be played in San Jose, Costa Rica. The matches will take place from July 31 to Aug. 13. Alvarez will join the team after participating in his first MLS Homegrown Game at 5:30 p.m. PT on Tuesday, July 31 against Tigres UANL U-20 at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta, Ga.
The 16-year-old Alvarez joins Mexico amid an impressive run of form in USL play for LA Galaxy II. He’s scored eight goals in seven appearances for Los Dos, including a hat trick against Saint Louis FC earlier this season.
The call-up will mark Alvarez’s third time joining the Mexican Youth National Team U-17s this year. In May, Alvarez was called up to participate in the Varsseveld International Tournament in the Netherlands. In February, Alvarez joined the U-17s for a 26-man training camp in Mexico City.
Alvarez was signed by the LA Galaxy to a Homegrown Player Contract on March 4, 2018. He was the seventh youngest player in MLS history to sign a league contract. A year earlier, he became the youngest USL player in the league’s history when he signed a contract with LA Galaxy II.
LA Galaxy II are next in action on Wednesday, Aug. 1, taking on Swope Park Rangers at 7:30 p.m. PT. Tickets to the match are available for purchase at www.lagalaxy.com/tickets/lagalaxyii/singlegame.
The LA Galaxy are back to MLS Regular Season play at 6 p.m. PT on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Dick’s Sporting Good Park in Commerce City, Colo. The match will be broadcast live on Spectrum SportsNet and Spectrum Deportes.
