LOS ANGELES (Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023) – The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has signed free-agent defender Chris Mavinga to a two-year contract through the end of the 2024 MLS season. Mavinga will be added to the Galaxy roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“Chris brings experience, quality and more championship pedigree to our back line,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. “We are pleased to add him to our group and look forward to him being an important contributor.”
Mavinga, 31, joins the Galaxy having played in 124 MLS regular-season matches (116 starts) across six seasons for Toronto FC (2017 – 22). In his first season with Toronto in 2017, Mavinga was part of the treble-winning Toronto FC side that claimed Canadian Championship, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup.
Across all competitions during his time with Toronto, Mavinga amassed 152 games played (141 starts), tallied four assists and helped the club win a Canadian Championship in 2018 and 2020.
Prior to joining Toronto, the Meaux, France, native played for French clubs Stade Rennais F.C. (2011-13), Stade de Reims (2014-15) and ES Troyes AC (2015-16), Russian side Rubin Kazan (2013-17) and made his professional debut with Belgian outfit K.R.C Genk (2011). Additionally, Mavinga played in the youth academy at Paris Saint-Germain.
At the international level, Mavinga has made five appearances for the DR Congo national team. In his most recent appearance for the DR Congo, Mavinga started and played 90 minutes against Tunisia on June 5, 2021. At the youth level, Mavinga helped the French U-19 team capture the 2010 UEFA Under-19 Championship.
