LOS ANGELES (Friday, Jan. 7, 2022) – The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has signed free agent midfielder Raheem Edwards to a three-year contract through the end of the 2024 MLS regular season with a club option for 2025. Edwards, who holds a U.S. Green Card, will not occupy an international roster slot.
Edwards, 26, joins the Galaxy having registered five goals and 13 assists in 92 career MLS regular-season matches (48 starts) across six seasons (2016 – Present). The Toronto, Ontario, native made his MLS debut with Toronto FC in 2016, appearing as a second-half substitute against Seattle Sounders FC on July 2, 2016. In 2017, Edwards made 21 appearances (10 starts) for Toronto, logging one goal and a career-high six assists. During the 2017 campaign, Edwards was part of the treble-winning Toronto FC side that claimed Canadian Championship, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup.
“Raheem is a versatile and dynamic player who is ready for another big step in his career,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. “We are thrilled to bring in a player of Raheem’s quality and experience within MLS to the Galaxy and I expect him to be a key contributor for our club.”
Edwards was selected by LAFC in the 2017 MLS Expansion Draft and later traded to CF Montréal, where he registered two goals in 14 games played (9 starts) during the 2018 campaign. Edwards was then traded by Montreal to Chicago Fire FC on July 17, 2018, tallying one goal and two assists in 13 appearances (10 starts) for Chicago. The following season, Edwards notched one goal in four games played (2 starts) for the Fire in 2019.
"We are excited to have Raheem join the LA Galaxy," said LA Galaxy Technical Director Jovan Kirovski. "He is a versatile player with MLS experience who will be a great addition to our squad."
On Feb. 11, 2020, Edwards was traded by Chicago to Minnesota United FC, where he tallied three assists in 12 games played (2 starts) during the 2020 MLS regular season. After Edwards’ rights were selected by LAFC in Stage 1 of the 2020 MLS Re-Entry Process, the Canadian international logged two assists in 27 games played (15 starts) across 1,369 minutes played during the 2021 campaign.
At the international level, Edwards has made four appearances for the Canadian Men’s National Team since starting and playing 53 minutes in a 2-1 win over Curacao on June 14, 2017. In his most recent appearance for Canada, Edwards played 15 minutes as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 win over New Zealand on March 24, 2018.
