LOS ANGELES (Wednesday, March 17, 2021) – The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has signed Spanish midfielder Victor Vázquez. Vázquez, 34, joins the LA Galaxy after a distinguished professional career that featured time spent with top clubs in Spain, Belgium, Mexico and Major League Soccer. He notched 18 goals and 26 assists total in just two seasons (2017, 2018) with Toronto FC, helping lead them to MLS Cup, the MLS Supporters’ Shield and the Canadian Championship titles during the 2017 season while also being honored as an MLS Best XI member under current Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. Vázquez, acquired through the MLS Allocation Process, joins the LA Galaxy on a one-year contract with a one-year option and will occupy an International roster spot. He will be added to the club’s roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“Victor is a talented, experienced and accomplished player who is familiar with Greg and playing in Major League Soccer,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese. “He was a top, creative player in our league while with Toronto and he will bring a great deal of leadership to our club both on and off the field. We are thrilled to add Victor to our roster and look forward to him representing the LA Galaxy.”
Vázquez joined Toronto FC under current Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney for the 2017 MLS Regular Season, when he helped lead TFC to one of the most successful seasons in MLS history. That year, he earned honors as a member of the MLS Best XI after scoring eight goals and adding 16 assists during regular season play. The following season, his production continued with another eight goals and nine assists in regular season play. In all, he tallied 18 goals and 26 assists in just 57 total appearances (MLS Regular Season and MLS Cup Playoffs), including six game-winning goals and eight game-winning assists. Following his time with TFC, Vázquez spent two seasons playing in Qatar and then in Belgium for K.A.S. Eupen last year.
Prior to joining MLS, the Spaniard played in 2016 for Liga MX club Cruz Azul, where he made 23 appearances, scoring one goal with one assist. He began his youth career at his hometown club, FC Barcelona (Barcelona) in 1997. Following his time in the youth system, Vázquez joined Barcelona C and eventually Barcelona B, remaining with Barcelona B for five seasons before being called into Pep Guardiola’s first team on numerous occasions. He made his debut for Barcelona on April 12, 2008 as a substitute and eventually played in two UEFA Champions League group stage matches during the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons as Barcelona went on to win the Champions League in both seasons.
Following his time at Barcelona, Vázquez signed with Belgian side Club Brugge KV (Club Brugge) of the Jupiler Pro League. In five seasons with the Belgian club, he made 173 appearances, scoring 25 goals with 50 assists combined in all competitions. Amongst those appearances were 33 matches in Europa League Qualifiers and the Europa League, where he scored seven goals with four assists. He helped Club Brugge advance to the quarter-finals of the 2014-15 Europa League tournament. Vázquez’s time in Belgium was highlighted by being named the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year for the 2014-15 season. That same year Club Brugge won the Belgian Cup and finished as runners up in the league. He was later sold to Cruz Azul following his time in Belgium.
Vázquez signs with the LA Galaxy following the club’s additions of midfielder Samuel Grandsir (AS Monaco), defender Derrick Williams (Blackburn Rovers F.C.), midfielder Carlos Harvey (Tauro F.C.), defender Oniel Fisher (free agent), defender Jorge Villafaña (Portland Timbers), goalkeeper Jonathan Bond (West Bromwich Albion F.C.), defender Marcus Ferkranus (LA Galaxy Academy), midfielder Adam Saldaña (LA Galaxy Academy) and defender Jalen Neal (LA Galaxy Academy) and the signing of goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann to a new contract.
The LA Galaxy’s 2021 MLS Regular Season Home opener is set for Sunday, April 25 at 2:30 p.m. PT at Dignity Health Sports Park against New York Red Bulls live on FS1. The club kicks off their 26th season in MLS on Sunday, April 18 at 12 p.m. PT when they face Inter Miami CF at Inter Miami CF Stadium live on ABC and ESPN Deportes.
