Entering Week 20 of the 2021 USL Championship campaign, San Diego Loyal SC play host to LA Galaxy II at Torero Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 3:00 p.m. PT live on ESPN+.
This year, Los Dos are 6-9-5 (23 points), with 34 goals scored and 38 conceded for a -4 goal differential. In their most recent match, Galaxy II played to a 3-3 draw against Sacramento Republic FC at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sept. 1. Preston Judd tallied a brace, while Jorge Hernández tallied his ninth goal of the 2021 campaign.
During the 2021 campaign, Judd has tallied 11 goals in the USL Championship, the most of any Galaxy II player and tied for fourth in the league. Additionally, Hernández ranks second on LA with nine goals scored, including leading the league with 58 chances created. Goalkeeper Justin vom Steeg leads the team with three shutouts and 35 saves in 13 appearances in 2021. Josh Drack ranks tied for sixth in the USL Championship with six assists. Notably, LA Galaxy II acquired Gerson Chávez on loan from Real C.D. España on Aug. 13 for the remainder of the 2021 USL Championship regular season.
Sunday’s contest mark the third meeting between the two clubs during the 2021 campaign. In the last meeting between the two clubs, Galaxy II fell 2-0 at home to San Diego on Aug. 1 In the first meeting between the two sides in 2021, San Diego defeated Los Dos 2-1 at Torero Stadium on June 12. In three meetings between LA and San Diego in 2020, the series was tied 1-1-1. Loyal SC and Los Dos will play once more this season, next squaring off at Dignity Health Sports Park on Oct. 2
In 2020, Los Dos finished the regular season 8-6-2 with 26 points (4-3-1 at home and 4-3-1 on the road), earning them second place in Group B standings and clinching a berth in the USL Championship Playoffs for the second-straight season.
Head Coach Junior Gonzalez holds a 20-21-10 record throughout his head coaching tenure with LA Galaxy II and has led the team to two-consecutive playoff appearances. In the seven years of USL Championship competition, Los Dos have qualified for playoffs five times, in addition to a USL Western Conference Championship in 2015.
LA Galaxy II compete in the USL Championship Western Conference Pacific Division for the 2021 campaign alongside the following clubs: Las Vegas Lights FC, Oakland Roots SC, Orange County SC, Phoenix Rising FC, Sacramento Republic FC, San Diego Loyal SC and Tacoma Defiance.
