CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy needed extra time but advanced to the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup with a 4-1 victory over UPSL side La Máquina FC.
Sebastian Lletget bagged a brace while Jose Villarreal and Dave Romney also found the back of the net for Los Angeles. Edwin Borboa scored the lone goal of the evening for the amateur side from Santa Ana.
The Galaxy bossed the match from the start and found their opener just 15 minutes into the match. LA’s goal came when Raul Mendiola delivered a cross to Villarreal, who chested the ball into the back of the net past La Máquina ‘keeper Luis Sosa.
After going up a goal, the Galaxy looked primed to add to their lead, but things took a turn in the 17th minute when Rafael Garcia received a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Rosendo Castro, who ultimately was forced to exit the match.
The hard-working and talented amateur side pulled level less than 10 minutes later when a failed clearance by A.J. DeLaGarza allowed a ball in the penalty area to fall to Borboa, who beat Clement Diop for the goal. As the match continued, the Galaxy dominated possession but couldn’t generate many chances against an organized UPSL squad.
Los Angeles nearly found the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute when Alan Gordon rounded the goalkeeper only to see his chance battled away in the closing seconds.
The Galaxy found the winner in the 6th minute of extra time when a quick free kick by Baggio Husidic found Dave Romney wide open in the box. The defender comfortably slotted his shot into the net for the eventual game-winner.
The Galaxy added a third in the dying moments of the first half of extra time when Lletget calmly slotted a penalty past Sosa. Lletget sealed the victory in the 115th minute after a breakaway following an error by a La Máquina defender.
