Notes:
- With the loss, the Galaxy are out of the U.S. Open Cup. This is the first time that they have not qualified for the tournament quarterfinals since 2009.
- This was the first time that the Galaxy have lost their first game in the Open Cup since 2009, when they lost to Colorado on penalty kicks in a U.S. Open Cup Play-In Game.
- Of the 11 players that started tonight’s game, only Chad Barrett and Bryan Gaul also started on Saturday in Houston. Bryan Jordan came on late in the first half for Hector Jimenez and Mike Magee came on midway through the second half for Barrett while Edson Buddle, Brian Perk and Kenney Walker each remained on the bench.
- Leonardo was making his first appearance in an official competition since suffering a severe knee injury at Chicago in April 2011.
- Every other player in the Galaxy starting XI had started at least one game this season.
- The Galaxy were without Andrew Boyens, Adam Cristman, Omar Gonzalez, Juninho and Dan Keat because of injury.
- David Beckham, A.J. DeLaGarza, Todd Dunivant and Sean Franklin each returned to Southern California following Saturday’s loss to Houston and were unavailable for selection in tonight’s game. Josh Saunders also missed the game while completing the MLS Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health program.
- LA dressed just six of a possible seven substitutes.
- Rafael Garcia was one of those six possible subs. This was his first appearance in an 18-man squad in all competitions this season. He came on for Bryan Gaul in the 71st minute and was booked 11 minutes later.
- Pat Noonan, who wore the captain’s armband for the first time this year, gave LA a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute, finishing a pass from Chad Barrett.
- The goal was Noonan’s second of the season in all competitions, having also scored once in the regular season.
- Barrett’s assist was his third in as many games and his fourth in all competitions. He is now tied with David Beckham for the team lead in assists this season.
- The Galaxy had to make all three of their substitutions because of injuries in a 27 minute span from the 44th minute to the 71st minute.
- Hector Jimenez was forced to leave the game in the 44th minute with a left knee injury. He was replaced by Bryan Jordan.
- Chad Barrett had to leave the game in the 65th minute because of cramping. He was replaced by Mike Magee.
- Bryan Gaul left the game in the 71st minute after being hit underneath his right eye. He was replaced by Rafael Garcia.
- This was Garcia’s first team debut.
- With Garcia and Leonardo each playing, only three of the 31 players on the Galaxy roster – Omar Gonzalez, Jack McBean and Jose Villarreal – have not appeared in a game this season.
- Second half substitute Ty Shipalane tied the score at 1-1 in the 75th minute, scoring from close range after being played through by Zack Schilawski. That was his first goal of the year in the Open Cup while it was Schilawski’s third assist.
- Shipalane then helped to set up the game-winner in the 88th minute, crossing for Brian Shriver to head home. Galaxy goalkeeper Bill Gaudette got a piece of the close range header but could not keep the ball out.
- Gaudette, who used to play for Carolina head coach Colin Clarke in Puerto Rico, made one save in the game.
- After outshooting the RailHawks 7-1 in the first half, the Galaxy were outshot 7-3 in the second half , though they did not put any of those three shots on target.
- This was the third straight game in which the Galaxy took a 1-0 lead, only to go on to lose the game. They are now 2-4-0 this season in all competitions when scoring first.
- Mike Magee is now the only Galaxy player to have appeared in all 16 of the club’s games this season in all competitions.
- The attendance for today’s game was a sellout of 7,939 at WakeMed Soccer Park.
- All eight of the Galaxy’s road games in all competitions this season have been sellouts.
