CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, May 30, 2015) – LA Galaxy II (5-4-1, 15 points) defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, 2-1 Saturday night at StubHub Center’s Track & Field Stadium behind a first-half goal from Daniel Steres before a late game winner from Raul Mendiola in second-half stoppage time.
Switchbacks FC opened the account early in the game when Miguel Gonzalez put the visitors ahead with a goal in the 17th minute completely against the run of play.
Los Dos responded in second-half stoppage time on a goal from defender Daniel Steres, his second of the season. The LA Galaxy II captain was able to head home a precise set piece from Andre Auras just before the whistle came for halftime.
Galaxy pressed forward in the second half looking for a winner but were continually thwarted by Colorado Spings goalkeeper Devala Gorrick.
Los Dos were rewarded with just seconds remaining in the game as midfielder Raul Mendiola, who leads USL with seven assists, was able to provide the winning goal. Mendiola collected a ball inside the 18 on a pass from Jack McBean before cutting back to his left and slotting in a ball past the Switchbacks FC goalkeeper to give LA Galaxy II its fifth win in six USL matches.
LA Galaxy II will now face Orange County Blues FC Saturday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. PT on the road at Anteater Stadium at UCI as they continue their USL Regular Season campaign. It will mark the first time Los Dos have faced their Southern California rivals this season.
