Major Mimiaga enlisted right out of high school in 1964 and went to Vietnam in 1965 with a second tour in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. After Vietnam, he received a promotion to Staff Sergeant and returned for duty on the Drill Field in San Diego, California where he received a meritorious promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.
Mimiaga also deployed from 1990- 1991 to the Gulf War and served nine months from the beginning of the buildup, through the war and was put as officer in charge to bring their equipment back.
Mimiaga was selected to 1st Lieutenant, Captain and retired as a Major after 31 years of service to the U.S. Marine Corps, serving two combat tours in Vietnam and one in the Gulf War.
Mimiaga was a public-school teacher in Hawaii for three years, he also taught with the Long Beach Unified for nineteen years and was the California State Teacher of the Year in 2006.
Some of his awards include, The Vietnam Service Medal six campaigns, The Gulf War Medal three Campaigns, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal with Frame and Palm and The Presidential Unit Award.
