CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, March 22, 2015) – LA Galaxy II opened up their second-ever campaign in USL with a scoreless draw against Real Monarchs SLC on Sunday evening at the StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium. The match served as the inaugural game for the Monarchs who are one of seven MLS affiliates to join the league for the 2015 season.
Galaxy first team mainstay A.J. DeLaGarza went 90 minutes in central defense during the scoreless draw as he looks to return to first team duty after a nagging left foot injury sidelined him for much of the preseason.
LA had the better of the run of play in the first half as they controlled possession but were unable to find the back of the net. Both Travis Bowen and recent signee Adonis Amaya tested Real Monarchs goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez but could not break through. Fernandez ended the match with four saves.
Real Monarchs started to find their footing in the second half as Sebastian Salcedo launched a blast from distance in the 60th minute that forced Clement Diop to make one of his three saves on the evening. In the 67th minute, the visitors nearly tallied once more as the Galaxy II needed some last ditch defending to clear out the danger on a Monarchs corner that nearly resulted in a clear chance.
The Galaxy’s struggles in front of goal continued into the second half as less than 10 minutes later after the Monarchs’ chance, Los Dos second half substitute Ariel Lassiter launched an uncontested shot over the bar. Lassiter had another opportunity in the 83rd minute but saw his attempt sail wide.
In the closing minutes, Galaxy II threw numbers forward in search of a goal but Los Dos were unable to find their winner.
Galaxy II return to action next weekend when they host defending USL champion Sacramento Republic on Saturday, March 28 on StubHub Center’s main field beginning at 7:30 p.m. PT.
