Giovani dos Santos continued his strong performance with the Mexican national team with the game-winning assist in Mexico’s 1-0 win over Panama on Tuesday in Chicago.
Dos Santos donned the captain’s armband in his second start with El Tri since the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 27-year-old went 90 minutes in his second appearance for Mexico under head coach Juan Carlos Osorio.
Mexico scored the lone goal of the match in the 69th minute when Dos Santos collected a pass on the wing before sending in a low cross that found Oribe Peralta in front of goal who calmly tapped it past Panama goalkeeper Jose Calderon.
The two sides would traded late chances, but Mexico ultimately held on to secure the victory.
In addition to his assist, Dos Santos tallied a goal from the penalty spot in Mexico’s 2-1 win over New Zealand on Saturday in Nashville. The two matches served as the final tune-up for Mexico before their pivotal World Cup on Nov. 11 qualifier against the United States in Columbus.
