LA Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe has been added to the U.S. Men’s National Team roster by head coach Bruce Arena for its annual January Camp at StubHub Center, U.S. Soccer announced today. Rowe replaces Seattle Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei, who withdrew from camp due to injury. He joins Galaxy teammates Gyasi Zardes and Sebastian Lletget on the USMNT squad, which reported to StubHub Center on Jan. 10 for training.
Rowe, 28, earns his first-ever call up to the Senior USMNT. He recorded his best season in Major League Soccer in 2016 with the LA Galaxy after earning the starting position in net, making 31 appearances and 30 starts while notching 113 saves, the third most in MLS last season. Rowe also conceded just 33 goals for a 1.10 GAA, the fewest of any MLS goalkeeper that make 30+ appearances on the year. His 76.4 save percentage was also among the highest in Major League Soccer as he earned a 12-5-14 record on the year with nine shutouts.
This is the first training camp coached by Bruce Arena since he took over the USMNT in November of last year, and comes just two months before Final Round Qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup resumes.
In preparation, the U.S. will begin the 2017 campaign with a friendly against Serbia on Jan. 29 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif. Kickoff for Bruce Arena’s first match back in charge of the USMNT is set for 1 p.m. PT, and will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and UniMas. Five days later, the MNT will make its first visit to Chattanooga on Feb. 3 when they host regional rival Jamaica. Kickoff in front of an expected capacity crowd of 20,000 at Finley Stadium is set for 4 p.m. PT, and the match will be broadcast live on FS1 and UniMas (simulcast on UDN).
