The LA Galaxy have acquired defender Rolf Feltscher on a free transfer, the club announced today. Feltscher, 27, is a Venezuelan international who has played professionally in Germany, Italy and Spain during his career. He will officially be added to the Galaxy’s roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC and occupy an International roster spot.
“Rolf is a talented outside back who has had success playing in top leagues in Europe and for the Venezuelan national team,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “We think highly of his soccer pedigree, his versatility and the skills he brings to our team. He will be another piece in building our backline. We are excited he is joining the LA Galaxy team.”
Throughout his career, Feltscher has made nearly 200 professional appearances for various clubs throughout Europe, including competition in La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy), 2. Bundesliga (Germany) and the Championship (England) in addition to collecting 19 caps with the Venezuelan national team. He joins the Galaxy from Cardiff City of the Championship league.
Born in Switzerland, Feltscher possesses dual citizenship with Venezuela and has made 19 appearances internationally, making his debut in 2011 at the age of 21. Since then, the defender has become a regular selection in the national team, he most recently helped his country in CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup Qualifying action, featuring in the team’s matches in August and September this year. He also featured for Venezuela during their 2016 Copa American Centenario campaign.
The Galaxy sign Feltscher after acquiring Norwegian defender Jorgen Skjelvik and acquiring the rights to former San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham.
Feltscher and the LA Galaxy will open the 2018 MLS Regular Season at StubHub Center on Sunday, March 4, at 7 p.m. PT against Portland Timbers FC, broadcast live to a national audience on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
