LA Galaxy II have signed midfielder Emmanuel Appiah, the club announced today. Appiah, 24, joins Los Dos after stints with Saint Louis FC and Sporting KC.
“Emmanuel has worked really hard in preseason to deserve a contract with our organization. He is going to provide instant experience up the spine of our team,” said LA Galaxy II Head Coach Mike Muñoz. “Emmanuel will be a great role model and leader for our group and will be able to help our younger guys understand what it takes to be a professional soccer player. We really feel we have added a solid piece to our project and our team. I look forward to working with Emmanuel on a daily basis.”
Appiah began his professional career in 2016, when he was selected 15th overall by Colorado Rapids in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Later that year, he was signed by Sporting KC and was subsequently loaned to Swope Park Rangers, making eight regular season appearances in addition to four postseason appearances, helping Swope Park to the 2016 USL Cup final. Signed the next season by Saint Louis FC, Appiah made ten appearances for the club in 2017.
Born in Sampa, Ghana, Appiah moved to Westerville, Ohio at an early age before attending the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated in 2015. He earned Second Team All-American Athletic Conference while with the Bearcats.
With one week remaining until the season opener, Appiah joins midfielder Geoffrey Acheampong, defender Nate Shultz, defender John Requejo and goalkeeper Wade Hamilton as the club’s newest signings. Appiah and LA Galaxy II will kick off the 2018 season Saturday, March 17 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, Colo. (5 p.m. PT, streamed live on LAGalaxy.com/2).
