LOS ANGELES (Monday, April 22, 2019) – The LA Galaxy have partnered with Copia™ in order to utilize unused and excess food on game days at Dignity Health Sports Park to be donated to those in need in the Los Angeles community. The LA Galaxy are the first Major League Soccer team to partner with Copia™.
“We are so excited to partner with Copia™ to track and manage our food waste in order to provide to those who need it,” said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein. “We remain committed to serving our community in everything we do, and fighting hunger in Los Angeles is an extremely important cause that we are proud to support.”
Copia™ makes healthy food more accessible to people in the community by helping businesses redistribute high-quality excess food to feed people in need. Businesses use the company’s technology platform to feed the community, save money, and reduce waste. Restaurants, hotels, hospitals, corporate cafeterias, and other businesses with food use Copia™’s technology to understand overproduction trends and reduce surplus over time, while ensuring that excess food is used to its highest and best potential — to feed people in need.
"We are thrilled to partner with LA Galaxy to end hunger and food waste in LA,” said Hayley Seed, Head of Sales, Copia. “The LA Galaxy is the first MLS team to make a major commitment to not only waste reduction, but also alleviating hunger and poverty. This team and Dignity Health Sports Park together are projected to provide tens of thousands of meals this season, resulting in preventing over 200,000 pounds of CO2e, the equivalent of removing over 20 cars off the road for an entire year. There are 23 other teams, in 23 other US cities that hopefully will see the impact of this initiative and bring Copia to their respective cities."
The LA Galaxy’s partnership with Copia™ comes in cojunction with the club’s Protect the Pitch sustainability initiative. In the previous few years, the LA Galaxy and Dignity Health Sports Park have launched numerous sustainability efforts to reduce carbon footprint and become more sustainable through the Protect the Pitch initiative. This year, the LA Galaxy and Dignity Health Sports Park were nominated for The StadiumBusiness Awards 2019 for the Sustainability & Community Award for their efforts behind Protect the Pitch.
