The LA Galaxy Academy Under-16’s qualified to the Championship Division of the Generation adidas Cup, an annual elite youth tournament held by adidas and MLS, after earning a 3-1-2 record during the Generation adidas Cup West Regional that took place at StubHub Center this weekend.
The regional event was the final regional tournament taking place ahead of this year’s 2016 GA Cup, and helped define the seeding for that competition.
The Galaxy Academy U-16’s were one of six MLS Academy teams taking part in the regional including Colorado Rapids, San Jose Earthquakes, Real Salt Lake, Portland Timbers, and Seattle Sounders FC. All games took place at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Following the games in Los Angeles, the final standings of the regional events determined qualification for the national event to take place in March. Tournament play began with three regional tournaments (East, Central and West) featuring U-17 teams from nearly all 20 MLS clubs. The Galaxy competed in two regional qualifying events from August 2015 to February 2016, finishing in the top three in the standings from the Western region and advancing to the Premier Division of the GA Cup finals.
