In conjunction with MLS Works Greener Goals Week of Service and LA Galaxy’s partnership with Garden School Foundation, the LA Galaxy Foundation completed their month-long Garden Beautification and Mural Initiative at Leapwood Avenue Elementary in Carson, California on Tuesday, April 17.
With the help of Garden School Foundation (GSF), a non-profit dedicated to providing a wide scope of education through hands-on learning in an environmentally friendly atmosphere, Galaxy and StubHub Center staff and LA Galaxy academy student athletes were able to transform and update the existing reading garden into a revitalized edible garden. The space now contains six vegetable beds and features decorations made by Leapwood students. Students will be able to use their newfound gardening skills in a nutritional cooking lab that GSF also provides.
Leading up to the event, the Boys’ LA Galaxy Academy members led a mural brainstorming session, interacting with 5th grade students from the school, learning about their favorite fruits and vegetables and how “learning is king at Leapwood Avenue Elementary School.” With the student’s inspiration as his guide, LA Galaxy graphic designer Brad Saiki was then put to the test of creating a mural that would encompass and blend the connection between the school, the newly planted garden, and the LA Galaxy.
April 17 marked the final day of the transformation, as over 40 Galaxy, StubHub Center, Leapwood Avenue, Galaxy Academy, and Garden School Foundation staff worked to bring this outstanding mural and garden to fruition. With zero exacto-knife injuries reported, Galaxy members primed, stenciled and painted the 41’ x 13’ mural overlooking the garden.
LA Galaxy Midfielder Baggio Husidic was also onsite Tuesday, helping students during their gardening and cooking classes. Husidic was able to assist students with planting seeds, watering plants and pulling weeds while putting the finishing touches on the mural.
With Earth Day approaching, the Leapwood Avenue garden beautification and mural initiative was another opportunity for the LA Galaxy to showcase their continued belief in supporting our community through environmentally friendly and sustainable opportunities.
To further showcase the MLS’s commitment to Greener Goals Week of Service, LA Galaxy players will wear special adidas kits built of technical yarns made using Parley Ocean Plastic™ during their April 21 match at StubHub Center against Atlanta United. The LA Galaxy Foundation will be auctioning off the exclusive autographed game worn jerseys; all proceeds will benefit the Galaxy Foundation’s mission to continue to improve the community through inclusion, education and volunteerism.
