Brazil’s World Cup campaign came to an end in horrifying fashion at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.
Germany booked the first ticket in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final in remarkable fashion with a historic 7-1 thumping of a Neymar-less Brazil. The Germans took the lead in the 11th minute when Thomas Muller found the back of the net. Just 18 minutes later, Die Mannschaft found themselves up by five with goals from Miroslav Klose, a pair from Toni Kroos and a tally by Sami Khedira. The last time that a team scored five goals in the opening 30 minutes of the World Cup is when Yugoslavia notched five against Zaire during the 1974 tournament.
Klose’s finish in the 23rd minute gave the 36-year-old his 16th World Cup goal which allowed him to surpass Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo’s mark of 15. Andre Schurrle added two goals for the Germans in the second half before Brazilian midfielder Oscar tallied a consolation goal in the dying moments of the defeat.
The humiliating result will go down in the history books as Brazil lost their first game on home soil since 1975 and the six goal margin of defeat equals Brazil’s 6-0 defeat to Uruguay in the 1920 Copa America.
World Cup action continues on July 9 when a Lionel Messi and Argentina takes on Netherlands at 1:00 p.m. PT with a berth in the World Cup final on the line.
