LOS ANGELES (Thursday, June 13, 2019) – The LA Galaxy will travel to take on Portland Timbers in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, announced this morning at a live draw. The match will take place at 8 p.m. PT on Wednesday, June 19 at Providence Park (ESPN+).
The Galaxy advanced to the next round after defeating Orange County FC in the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup, with a brace from Efrain Alvarez and a goal from Emil Cuello. Both players scored their first goals for the LA Galaxy in the match.
In 2018, the Galaxy traveled to Portland, but were defeated by the Timbers in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. Portland secured the win courtesy of a goal by Sebastian Blanco. The Galaxy also faced Portland at Providence Park in 2016, which ended in a 1-0 victory for LA thanks to a game-winning goal from Raul Mendiola.
The Galaxy have recorded a 35-18-0 all-time record in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. They have entered the Open Cup every year since 1999, winning the tournament in 2001 and 2005 and reached the Open Cup Final on two other occasions.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for over 100 consecutive years dating from 1914. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
The LA Galaxy return to MLS action on Saturday, June 22 when they face FC Cincinnati for the sides’ first-ever contest at Nippert Stadium (4:30 p.m. PT; Spectrum SportsNet).
