CARSON, Calif. (Monday, Sept. 8 2014) – LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 26 of the 2014 MLS regular season. This is the third Player of the Week honor for Donovan this season and his second in as many weeks.
Donovan recorded two goals and two assists in the Galaxy’s 6-0 victory over Colorado on Friday. He is now the all-time MLS leader in game winning goals with 141. With 131 career assists, Donovan is just four assists behind Steve Ralston for the MLS record.
Donovan’s first goal of the night came from the penalty spot in the 5th minute after a red card was issued to Rapids goalkeeper Joe Nasco. Donovan stepped and hit the ball dead center as Clint Irwin dove the other way.
Donovan notched his first assist on the evening in the second minute of added time in the first half. Galaxy midfielder Baggio Husidic played a pass to Donovan, whose one-touch pass found Gyasi Zardes making a run to the six-yard box. Zardes slotted the ball in to the net passed the on rushing Irwin.
In the 47th minute, Donovan again added to his goal tally from the penalty spot. The veteran slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to put the Galaxy up 4-0.
Donovan’s second assist came in the 86th minute to give the Galaxy a 6-0 lead. Donovan played a pass to the on-rushing Husidic who curled a first time shot passed the opposing ‘keeper and into the back of the net.
