CARSON, Calif. (Monday, March 17, 2014) – With a trip to the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals on the line, the LA Galaxy will travel to Tijuana, Mexico to take on Club Tijuana at Estadio Caliente on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. PT live on Fox Sports 2 and Galavision. The Galaxy head into the second leg of the goal aggregate home-and-home series with a 1-0 advantage as newly minted Brazilian forward Samuel gave the Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the series with his 11th minute strike at StubHub Center Wednesday evening. Following the Galaxy’s Champions League tie, Bruce Arena’s squad will head to Salt Lake City for a second consecutive league match against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, March 22 at 1:00 p.m. PT live on NBC Sports Network.
All-time the Galaxy is 11-6-3 in CONCACAF Champions League play and 2-1-2 in the quarterfinals of the regional competition. Since first appearing in the Champions League in August 2010, the Galaxy are 2-3-0 against Mexican opposition. The Galaxy saw their bid for the 2013 CONCACAF Champions League come up short as they were defeated by Monterrey 2-1 at StubHub Center April 3 and 1-0 at Estadio Tecnologico a week later. Monterrey went on to win its third consecutive CONCACAF Champions League.
Club Tijuana enters Tuesday’s match following a 2-1 defeat to Cruz Azul in Mexico City, Mexico at Estadio Azul Saturday night. With the defeat, the Xolos are now 4-5-2 with 14 points sitting in 12th place in the Liga MX 2014 Clausura.
Due to the Galaxy moving its March 15 match against D.C. United to focus on CONCACAF Champions League, the LA side will play a second consecutive match against RSL to start the 2014 campaign. The Galaxy are 3-5-4 in matches played in the Beehive state. In the season opener, the Galaxy managed 20 shots, nine of which were on target. RSL ‘keeper Nick Rimando was up for the challenge amassing nine saves, including a stoppage time Robbie Keane penalty to give the defending Western Conference Champions a 1-0 result over the Galaxy at StubHub Center.
