Landon Donovan sets new all-time MLS assist record vs. Toronto FC

Landon Donovan became the new all-time MLS assist king by notching his 136th assist in the LA Galaxy’s 3-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday evening.

Donovan took sole possession of the record from New England great Steve Ralston with his helper in the 25th minute on Robbie Keane’s second goal of the evening. The assist came as Donovan fed a ball to A.J. DeLaGarza out on the right flank before the defender launched a cross that Keane smashed on a volley past Joe Bendik into the back the Toronto net.

In addition to setting a new all-time assist record, Donovan now has a career-high 19 assists which ties him with four other players for the second-best single season assist tally. Donovan is seven assists behind Carlos Valderrama’s single season record of 26 assists from the 2000 MLS season.

Notching the all-time assist record helped Donovan solidify his place as the league’s all-time scoring king after he set a new MLS goal scoring record earlier this year.
