Chad Barrett

How Acquired: Traded to the Galaxy from Toronto FC in exchange in exchange for future considerations on January 13, 2011.

A dangerous goal scorer who had eight goals in all competitions for the Galaxy last year, Barrett was forced to miss MLS Cup after suffering a severe right foot injury just more than a week before the game. Strong in the air and good at holding the ball up, he formed an instant partnership with Robbie Keane last season and will look to continue that this season.

MLS Highlights

2011: Won his first MLS Cup after finishing second on the Galaxy with seven regular season goals and eight in all competitions. He tallied his second best single season totals in both goals and assists, tallying five assists in addition to his seven goals with the Galaxy going 8-0-0 when he scored and 4-1-0 when he recorded and assist. Helped the Galaxy win both legs of the SuperClasico against Chivas USA, scoring in each of LA’s 1-0 wins. He scored his first goal in a Galaxy uniform on 4/17 at Chicago, tallying late in the first half of that 2-1 win on 4/17. He added a goal and an assist a week later at home against Portland on 4/23. Tallied the first multi-assist game of his MLS career on 5/14, setting up a pair of goals in the 4-1 home win over Sporting Kansas City. He missed two months of the season because of an ankle injury, but he scored just six minutes after returning to the field against Alajuelense in the Champions League. His goal in second half stoppage time at Columbus on 9/24 gave LA a 1-0 win and then he scored again in the 2-1 home win over Real Salt Lake on 10/1, a win that put the Galaxy on the verge of clinching the Supporters’ Shield. That goal was the 40th of his MLS career. After finishing the year with a goal or an assist in five of his last six regular season games, he started each of LA’s first three postseason games but was forced to miss MLS Cup after suffering a dislocated right foot in training ahead of that game. 2010: Tallied seven goals and added two assists in 23 MLS games while also helping Toronto FC qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time in club history. The club’s second leading goal scorer in the league, Barrett opened his 2010 goal account with a pair of goals against Chicago on 5/8 before adding single tallies in wins over New England and San Jose later in the month. He added three league goals and two assists over the final four months of the year, scoring against Philadelphia, Chivas USA and Seattle while collecting assists against Colorado and San Jose, though TFC was just 2-3-0 in those games. He added one goal in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship before adding one in both legs of their CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round series with Motagua. 2009: In his first full season with Toronto, Barrett scored five goals and added three assists in 29 games. Two of his five goals came in the 3-1 win at San Jose on 7/20 while he added single tallies at FC Dallas on 4/19, vs. Columbus on 5/2 and then in his return to Chicago on 9/26, while also adding two goals in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. 2008: Split the season between Chicago and Toronto after being traded to the Reds on 7/30. Between the two teams, he finished the season with 29 games played while scoring a career-high nine goals and seven assists, also a career-high. He had five goals and four assists in 16 games with the Fire before being traded. He scored in two of his first three games of the season and then added a pair of goals in a 5-1 win at New York on 5/28. He was on the scoresheet again in the Fire’s next game, scoring his team’s only goal in a 2-1 loss at home against D.C. United. His fourth and final assist in a Fire jersey came on 7/12 in a 2-1 win over Toronto FC, exactly 18 days before being traded to the club. Barrett made his Toronto debut on 8/3 vs. Dallas and then scored his first goal for the club a week later, tallying in a 1-0 win at Colorado on 8/9. He scored his first home goal on 8/23 against New England before adding an assist on 9/6 at The Home Depot Center against Chivas USA. He had his first multi-goal game for the club at New York on 10/4, tallying on either side of halftime, including the game-winner in a 3-1 win. 2007: Recovered from injury to play in all 30 of the Fire’s games in 2007, finishing with a team-best seven goals to win Chicago’s Golden Boot. He scored twice in April before adding single tallies in each of the final five months of the regular season, leading the Fire to a 3-1-3 record in those seven games. He also added two assists in the regular season, including one in a 2-1 win over New England on 10/6 in which he scored the game-winning goal. In the postseason, Barrett started in all three of the Fire’s games, scoring the first goal of his postseason career goal in the second leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinal Series win over D.C. United, helping the Fire to a 3-2 aggregate goal win. 2006: Was limited to just 16 appearances in his second season with the Fire, finishing fourth on the team with five goals. He scored the first goal of the 2006 MLS season on 4/1, tallying in a 3-2 loss at FC Dallas. He added his second goal of the year at Kansas City on 5/6 before recording the first multigoal game of his career on 6/28, scoring twice in a 22 minute appearance off the bench against Real Salt Lake. He scored his final goal of the year in a 3-0 win over Kansas City on 8/16 but played in just two more games the rest of the year because of injury. Barrett had one assist in the regular season and added another in the U.S. Open Cup as he helped the Fire win that year’s tournament, defeating LA in the Open Cup Final. 2005: Was selected by the Chicago Fire in the first round (3rd overall) of the MLS SuperDraft. He made his debut in their season opener on 4/2. He scored the first goal of his career on 5/28, helping the Fire to a 3-0 win at Real Salt Lake. He appeared in 20 games that season, making four starts and collecting four assists to go along with his goal. The first of those assists came in the third appearance of his career against San Jose on 4/16 before adding assists at LA and at home against Columbus and the MetroStars. He also appeared in nine Reserve Division games, scoring eight goals, which were toed for the second most in MLS.

College Highlights

Played two years at UCLA (2003-04), scoring 16 goals and adding 18 assists while helping the Bruins to a 34-6-3 record and a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. A two-time Second Team All-Pac-10 performer, Barrett was named the conference’s Co- Freshman/Newcomer of the Year in 2003 when he finished second on the team with 10 goals and eight assists while starting 17 of the 23 games that he appeared in. One year later, Barrett had a team-best 10 assists and added six goals, despite missing a portion of the season while with the U.S. Under-20 National Team. He left school after his sophomore season to sign with MLS.

National Team

Barrett has one cap for the U.S., coming on as a second half substitute for Freddy Adu in the 1-0 win at Barbados on 6/22/08. That result gave the U.S. a 9-0 series win on aggregate. He has represented the U.S. at the U-18, U-20 and U-23, playing at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Holland. He scored in three of the four games that the U.S. played in, scoring once. That goal gave the U.S. a 1-0 win over Argentina in their first game of the tournament. One year earlier, Barrett scored three of the four goals scored by the U.S. at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.
