LOS ANGELES – The LA Galaxy Girls’ Academy Under-14’s were crowned champion at the inaugural Angeles Football Cup with victory over European powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais.
Los Angeles defeated the six-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winners 2-0 to cap an undefeated run at the tournament. Galaxy Academy players Valerie Vargas-Arceo and Greta Irvine earned places in the competition’s Best XI for their performances. Vargas-Arceo was also named player of the tournament and finished as the top goalscorer.
The Galaxy went undefeated during the group stage earning a 2-1 win over Atletico de Madrid, a scoreless draw with Zaragoza, and a 3-0 win over Osasuna. The eventual champions then defeated Spanish giants Valencia in a penalty kick shootout to reach the final.
