Rack up another World Cup qualifying victory for A.J. DeLaGarza and the tiny island territory of Guam, this time against a nation of more than 1.2. billion people.
Goals by former Galaxy midfielder Brandon McDonald and Travis Nicklaw were enough for the Matao to defeat India 2-1, giving Guam their second straight victory in the second round of AFC World Cup qualifying. The Blue Tigers picked up a late goal from former Sporting Kansas City striker Sunil Chhetri in the third minute of stoppage time, but it wasn't enough for the Indians to share the spoils. DeLaGarza went 90 minutes in the victory, and was responsible for denying an attempt by Indian striker C.K Vineeth during the game's early stages.
Guam are now in first place in Group D with six points, ahead of Oman (three points) and Iran (one point), who have each played one fewer game than the Matao. Turkmenistan (one point) and India (zero points) round out the group in fourth and fifth place respectively.
After earning two wins at home, Guam will play their next World Cup qualifier on hostile ground as they travel to face Iran on Sept. 3 before returning to the island to host Oman on Sept. 8.
