A.J. DeLaGarza and the Guam national team’s dreams of qualifying for the East Asian Football Championships were dashed last week with three losses in semifinal group matches.
DeLaGarza started and went 90 minutes in Guam’s 2-0 defeat to North Korea on Wednesday and then later put in another full shift in the Matao’s 2-0 loss to Chinese Taipei four days later. Guam dropped their Semifinal round opener 3-2 to Hong Kong on Sunday before DeLaGarza’s arrival.
The tournament was a frustrating one for Guam and new head coach Darren Sawatzky as the Matao allowed seven goals and scored just once. Guam ends their 2016 without a victory in any of their five matches against international opposition this year.
