CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena confirmed that Steven Gerrard will make his club debut on Saturday when LA face off against Club America in International Champions Cup.
Arena told reporters after the team’s training session on Thursday that the former Liverpool FC midfielder will play “45 minutes” in the team’s friendly this weekend.
“We’re getting Steven Gerrard on the field for a first time. That’s good because the games mean a little bit more next week, certainly, with his home opener in the league next week against San Jose,” Arena said. “We can practice all that we want, he needs to get into game situations with his teammates, and this will give him the opportunity, and give us the opportunity.
“We’re playing him 45 minutes. We’re playing two teams with 45 minutes each.”
The 35-year-old Gerrard has trained with the Galaxy for a week, and was officially unveiled to the local media on Tuesday.
