CARSON, Calif. – U.S. National Team acting head coach Dave Sarachan named a youthful 21-man roster for the United States’ friendly against Portugal on Nov. 14 in Leiria.
For the USMNT’s final game of 2017, Sarachan has brought in plenty of youth with over half of the squad under the age of 24. Seven members of the squad are U.S. U-20 alumni from the program’s two recent World Cup cycles.
“The one word that I would use in reference to all of this is opportunity,” Sarachan said in a statement released by U.S. Soccer. “It’s an opportunity for many players who haven’t been in the picture that we feel have a bright future with the National Team to get to measure themselves in a game against a quality opponent. It’s an opportunity for our National Team to finish out 2017 in a positive way. It’s also just an opportunity to move on. As much as we’re still gutted from how things turned out with qualifying, we have to look ahead and finish out the year the right way.”
The youngest player on the squad is 17-year-old forward Josh Sargent who will become the first player to appear for the U-17s, U-20s, and senior team in one calendar year.
The friendly with Portugal will take place at 12:45 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on FS1, UniMas and UDN.
