Galaxy Giving Initiative continues with a special beautification project

Watts Beautification Project

The Galaxy Giving volunteer initiative continued on June 27th, a sunny Wednesday afternoon, as the LA Galaxy Foundation partnered with The Mission Continues to complete a beautification project at Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School. This event was part of the week-long Operation Watts Is Worth It service initiative.

The Mission Continues integrates veterans back into life at home through deploying them on community service projects in their areas. With five core values — work hard, trust, learn and grow, respect, and have fun — The Mission Continues’ volunteers extend their heroism at home through their service.

The day began with a speech from Reagan Turner, Western Executive Director of The Mission Continues, to excite the volunteers. He reminded them of the impact their contributions will make in the students’ lives. After the organizations were separated into task groups for the day, they began working on mini projects, such as painting murals on hand ball walls, hopscotch steps, a futsal court on the playground’s black top, as well as refurbishing planters.

The LA Galaxy were well represented as members from our Star Squad and LA Galaxy staff volunteers were in attendance. Even Cozmo came to lend a helping hand.

With brisk work from all organizations, most of the work was close to completion by lunchtime — a testament to the volunteers’ efficiency and dedication to their respective projects.

The day’s efforts will be welcomed and fully enjoyed come fall.  Students from Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School will return for the school year to a reformed asphalt black top, which now boasts tons of bright colors and ways to play.
