CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy offense was halted in their tracks on Saturday in their 2-0 defeat to Atlanta United at StubHub Center.
Goals by Josef Martinez and Miguel Almiron proved to be the difference for Atlanta against the Galaxy. Los Angeles registered just a single shot on target compared to seven by Atlanta who looked in control for much of the game and forced a herculean performance from goalkeeper David Bingham who made five saves.
Against the organized Atlanta defense, the Galaxy offense looked too reticent as the attackers were too often forced to settle for half-chances with attempts sent wide and rarely challenging the goal. With the Atlanta defenders cleaning up the danger with 25 clearances, goalkeeper Brad Guzan enjoyed a quiet night, making just a single save.
After the match, head coach Sigi Schmid admitted that his attack needed to be more aggressive.
"I don't think we got enough shots off, we were looking for one extra pass all the time," Schmid said. "There are times where you just have to say that you're going to hit it."
And forward Zlatan Ibrahimović, who was held without a single shot, agreed.
“When it doesn’t go in, it doesn’t go in, but it’s not like we had clear chances, to be honest,” Ibrahimović said.
