CARSON, Calif. – Landon Donovan is making another comeback.
The LA Galaxy and U.S. National Team legend announced on Friday that he is coming out of retirement to play for Liga MX side Club León.
"Landon is a competitor, he truly is excited about the opportunity with León, and he plans to go there to compete and help the club win championships,” Donovan’s agent, Richard Motzkin, told MLSsoccer.com.
The news broke on Friday night with Leon posting a photo of the Galaxy and MLS legend in their green kit, ending a week of speculation of the 35-year-old's potential return. Donovan later confirmed the news and issued a statement that indicated his latest comeback could be motivated by diplomatic reasons.
"I don't believe in walls," Donovan wrote in a tweet. " I want to go to Mexico, dress in green and win trophies with Leon."
The league’s all-time leader in goals and assists retired after helping the Galaxy to the 2014 MLS Cup and then returned to retirement after a brief return during the end of the 2016 season.
As the news swirled throughout the soccer world, the 35-year-old's former teammate Omar Gonzalez, himself a defender for Club Pachuca, welcomed the forward to the league.
Donovan is the fourth USMNT international to play for Club León joining William Yarborough, Eric Wynalda, and Marcelo Balboa.
