SAN JOSE, Calif. – The LA Galaxy hope to earn their second consecutive berth in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on Monday when they face the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium.
The Galaxy’s quarterfinal matchup with the Earthquakes will be Los Angeles’ second match in Northern California in 10 days. San Jose notched a 2-1 comeback victory over Curt Onalfo’s team on July 1 at Stanford Stadium.
Los Angeles picked a 4-2 win in their only meeting at Avaya Stadium back in May. Monday’s contest carries extra weight not only because the Galaxy are just three wins from a trophy, but also because of their disappointing 6-2 defeat to Real Salt Lake on July 4.
"This is a very important game for us. We want to go and win the game,” Onalfo told LA Galaxy Insider. “We want to win this competition. It’s a big game for us. We want to go there and do business."
The Galaxy will welcome Giovani dos Santos back from a lengthy international absence while captain Jelle Van Damme will also be available after serving a one-game suspension.
