Mexico dream of a second Confederations Cup title is over.
Giovani dos Santos and El Tri crashed out of the tournament on Thursday with a 4-1 defeat to Germany in the Confederations Cup semifinals in Sochi. Dos Santos started the match and went 63 minutes for Juan Carlos Osorio’s squad in the loss.
Leon Goretzka scored twice in the opening eight minutes to put Germany ahead to start the match. Germany added to their lead in the start of the second half when Timo Werner tallied the World Champions’ third of the evening.
Marco Fabian found the back of the net for Mexico in stoppage time with a blast from distance to put El Tri on the board and break the shutout. Any hopes of a Mexico comeback were silenced just seconds later when Amin Younes rounded out the scoring for the World Cup holders.
The Germans will face Chile for the Confederations Cup title on Sunday in Saint Petersburg. Mexico will now take on Portugal in the third-place game at Otkrytiye Arena in Moscow on Sunday. The match will kick off at 5 a.m. PT.
