Sigi Schmid says the LA Galaxy "got a lot out of" preseason preparations

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy didn’t earn a victory in their last preseason test of the year, but head coach Sigi Schmid was pleased with his team’s preparation before the MLS regular season opener.

The Galaxy fell 2-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday to end their preseason with a 2-4-0 record. Despite the losing record, the Galaxy, who underwent a significant roster overhaul in the offseason, showed plenty of positive signs in the attack and in defense over the last month.

As he looked back on the preseason, Schmid admitted that he believes better days lay ahead once the regular season opens on March 4.

POST GAME QUOTES: Hear from Sigi Schmid, Ola Kamara and more

“We got a lot out of preseason, in what we wanted in terms of obviously putting the new guys into positions. I think our fitness level is good,” Schmid said. “You saw us go for 90 minutes we were still pushing it at the end. But, there’s still that little bit of cohesion, that understanding.

“There was a play at the end of the game where [Ola] Kamara makes a run to the near post and he opens up the space behind him for [Chris] Pontius, but [Chris] Pontius doesn’t react and Romain [Alessandrini] plays the ball into that space. So, Romain [Alessandrini] is obviously disappointed, because he thought, here’s a good ball, and I talked to Chris [Pontius] about it, and that’s the little bit of just getting to know each other. That’s just going to take time. You’re not going to create that in two or three games. I thought today our understanding of each other positionally, defensively, I thought was much better. I can’t complain with the chances we’re creating.”
