Sigi Schmid says LA Galaxy have "flexibility" as they look to improve roster in the offseason

CARSON, Calif. – Sigi Schmid stated that the LA Galaxy’s recent roster moves were designed to give the team flexibility ahead of the league’s offseason.

Late last month, the Galaxy announced their roster moves, which saw the departure of 12 players including several Homegrown players. As the team seeks to return to the summit after a disappointing 2017 campaign, Schmid believes the moves gave the team extra wiggle room as they try to improve the roster.

“For us, obviously, there were two objectives. We needed to open up some space,” Schmid told LA Galaxy Insider. “In some situations, it was salary, and we tried to make ourselves as flexible as possible so we could be able to acquire new players and not be tied down to roster spots. It was really about giving us flexibility.”

Regarding some of the younger players released, Schmid did not close the door on any potential return but admitted it might be time to move on.

“You never say no to anything, but some of the guys had been with the team awhile. Sometimes it’s good to spread your wings and get out there,” Schmid said. “We’ll see what happens. There are options that there for them. They’ve been loyal players for the Galaxy and players who are still relatively young with good potential. It’s a situation of seeing what is the best situation for them.”
